In the key of C major, the chords are built from the notes of the C major scale, which has no sharps or flats (C, D, E, F, G, A, B). Each note in the scale is assigned a number, called a scale degree, and chords are built on those degrees.

In this simple version of “Jingle Bells” the chords you’ll meet are C (the I chord), which is the root chord in the key of C.
Another important chord is F (the IV chord), built from the fourth note of the scale, and G (the V chord), built from the fifth note.

These chords work well together and form the backbone of many songs.

These three chords are closely related to the C major scale, and learning how they fit together helps you understand why they sound so good when played in sequence.

7. More About the song “Jingle Bells” and the composer.

“Jingle Bells” is one of the most iconic holiday songs in the world, though it was originally written for Thanksgiving.

Composed by James Lord Pierpont in 1857 and initially titled “The One Horse Open Sleigh”, the song celebrates the joys of winter sleigh rides.

Pierpont wrote both the melody and lyrics, capturing the excitement and fun of dashing through snow-covered fields.

Despite not being a Christmas song initially, “Jingle Bells” quickly became associated with the holiday season.

Today, it is a staple of festive gatherings and was even one of the first songs broadcast from space in 1965, solidifying its place in both music and cultural history.

[Verse]

C                             C             C                      F
Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh,

F                         G   G                     C
O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way.

C                         C     C                   F
Bells on bob-tails ring, making spirits bright,

         F              G                    G                       C
What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight. Oh!

[Chorus]

C                   C                 C                       C
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!

A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride

       F                       G             G                   C
And soon Miss Fanny Bright was seated by my side

       C                           C           C                          F
The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot

       F            G                       G                    C
We ran into a drifted bank and there we got upsot. Oh!

I went out on the snow and on my back I fell

    C                     C         C                      F
A gent was riding by in a one-horse open sleigh

      F                       G                    G                   C
He laughed at me as I there lay but quickly drove away.  Oh!

[Chorus]

[Verse]

Now the ground is white, go it while you’re young

Take the girls along and sing this sleighing song

       C                    C            C               F
Just get a bobtailed bay, two forty as his speed
