A passage is a short section or excerpt of a musical work that is often identified by its musical or technical characteristics.
What is a Passage?
A passage may consist of a melodic phrase, a rapid scale, an arpeggio, a chord progression, or any other distinct musical idea. Musicians and teachers commonly refer to passages when discussing interpretation, technique, or practice strategies.
Some passages are notable because they are technically demanding, while others stand out for their expressive or structural importance within a composition.
How is a Passage used in piano playing?
Pianists often isolate individual passages during practice rather than repeating an entire piece. Working on small sections at a slow tempo helps improve accuracy, coordination, and musical control before reintegrating the passage into the complete performance.
Learning to practise difficult passages efficiently is one of the most effective ways to make steady progress at the piano.
