How Long Should I Practise Piano Each Day?

Short answer: For most beginners, 15–20 minutes of focused daily practice is far more effective than playing for two hours once a week.

Many adult beginners struggle to find time to practise and try to make up for it with long weekend sessions. Although the intention is good, it’s not the most effective way to learn the piano.

Consistency Beats Duration

Your brain and muscle memory need both repetition and rest to develop new skills. When you practise a little every day, your brain continues processing what you’ve learned while you sleep. Returning to the same material the next day strengthens those neural pathways far more effectively than waiting an entire week between practice sessions.

Focus Matters More Than Time

After about 20 to 30 minutes of intense concentration, most people begin to lose focus. Mistakes become more frequent, and there’s a greater risk of reinforcing poor habits instead of improving.

Fifteen minutes of fully focused practice is far more valuable than 45 minutes spent casually playing songs you already know while your mind is elsewhere.

If you have extra time on a particular day, consider splitting it into two shorter sessions—for example, 20 minutes in the morning and another 20 minutes in the evening. Short, focused practice sessions usually produce better long-term results than one long practice session.
