How to play the D Minor Chord on your piano or keyboard

From the chord symbol Dm we get the following information:

  • The Dm chord has the note D as root note
  • The Dm chord is a 3-note chord (a triad)
  • The Dm chord is a minor chord

Because Dm is a 3-note chord it also has 3 inversions:

  • Root inversion
  • 1st. inversion
  • 2nd. inversion

Dm chord – Root inversion (basic inversion) looks like this: D – F – A

Dm chord – 1st. inversion (root note at the top of the chord): F – A – D

Dm chord – 2nd. inversion (root note in the middle of the chord): A – D – F
