How to play the E Major 7th. Chord on your piano or keyboard

From the chord symbol E7 we get the following information:

  • The E7 chord has the note E as root note
  • The E7 chord is a 4-note chord (a tetrad)
  • The E7 chord is a minor chord

Because E7 is a 4-note chord it also has 4 inversions:

  • Root inversion
  • 1st. inversion
  • 2nd. inversion
  • 3rd. inversion

E7 chord – Root inversion (basic inversion) looks like this: E – G# – B – D

E7 chord – 1st. inversion: G# – B – D – E 

E7 chord – 2nd. inversion: B – D – E – G#

E7 chord – 3rd. inversion: D – E – G# – B
