Ornaments – Definition
Ornaments are decorative musical notes or figures that embellish a melody without changing its underlying harmonic structure. They add expression, character, and stylistic detail to a performance.
What are Ornaments?
Common ornaments include the trill, grace note, mordent, and turn. They are often indicated by special symbols or small notes in written music and may be performed differently depending on the musical style and historical period.
Although ornaments are closely associated with Baroque and Classical music, they are also widely used in jazz, blues, rock, pop, gospel, and many traditional musical styles.
Why are Ornaments important for pianists?
Ornaments add expression and individuality to piano playing. They help melodies sound more natural, expressive, and stylistically authentic while demonstrating technical control and musical sensitivity.
Learning common ornaments also improves finger coordination, rhythmic accuracy, and the ability to perform music with greater confidence and expression.
