A block chord is a chord in which all notes are played simultaneously. Unlike an arpeggio or broken chord, every note is struck at the same moment, creating a full and powerful sound.

What is a block chord?

Block chords are used in many styles of music, including pop, rock, jazz and classical piano. The notes are played together rather than one after another, producing a strong harmonic effect.

In jazz, the term block chords can also describe a harmonization technique in which the melody is supported by closely voiced chords that move in parallel. This approach is closely associated with the locked hands style made famous by pianist George Shearing.

How are block chords used in piano playing?

Block chords are commonly used to emphasize important beats, create rhythmic accompaniment and add energy to a performance. Playing them cleanly requires all fingers to strike the keys at exactly the same time.

Mastering block chords is an important step toward developing strong rhythm, accurate timing and expressive chord playing in many different musical styles.
