Harmonization – Definition

Harmonization is the process of adding chords to a melody. It involves selecting harmonies that support, enhance, and shape the character of the melodic line.

What is Harmonization?

Harmonization begins by identifying the key, the melody’s important notes, and the underlying harmonic rhythm. Chords are then chosen to complement the melody while creating a logical and expressive chord progression.

A single melody can often be harmonized in many different ways. Simple harmonizations may use basic major and minor triads, while more advanced versions include seventh chords, extended chords, substitutions, and reharmonization techniques.

How is Harmonization used in piano playing?

Harmonization is one of the most valuable skills for pianists who accompany singers, play by ear, or arrange music. By understanding how chords relate to a melody, pianists can quickly create effective accompaniments without relying on written sheet music.

Many beginners start by harmonizing melodies with the primary chords of the key (I, IV, and V). As their harmonic knowledge grows, they can introduce richer chord choices that add color, movement, and emotional depth to the music.
