Sample Rate – Definition

Sample rate is the number of times per second an analog audio signal is measured and converted into digital data. It is measured in hertz (Hz) or kilohertz (kHz).

What is Sample Rate?

The sample rate determines the highest frequencies that can be accurately captured in a digital recording. According to the Nyquist theorem, the sample rate must be at least twice the highest frequency that needs to be reproduced.

Common sample rates include 44.1 kHz for music production, 48 kHz for video production, and higher rates such as 96 kHz for certain professional recording and audio processing workflows.

Why is Sample Rate important for pianists?

Pianists using digital recording equipment, virtual instruments, or audio interfaces will regularly encounter sample rate settings. For most music production, 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz provides excellent audio quality while keeping file sizes manageable.

Using the same sample rate throughout a recording project helps prevent playback problems, synchronization issues, and unwanted audio artifacts.
