Synthesizer – Definition

A synthesizer, often called a synth, is an electronic musical instrument that generates sound electronically rather than reproducing recorded samples or relying on acoustic vibration. Synthesizers are capable of creating an enormous variety of unique sounds.

What is a Synthesizer?

A synthesizer creates sound using oscillators, filters, amplifiers, and envelope generators such as ADSR. By combining different waveforms and applying modulation and effects, it can produce everything from warm pads and powerful basses to expressive leads and sound effects.

Synthesizers may be analog, digital, or hybrid, each offering its own sonic characteristics and programming possibilities.

Why is a Synthesizer useful for pianists?

Modern keyboard players often use synthesizers alongside traditional piano sounds to expand their musical palette. Learning basic synthesis concepts such as waveform selection, filter cutoff, resonance, and envelopes allows pianists to create sounds that suit different musical styles.

Whether performing live or producing music in a studio, understanding synthesizers opens up countless creative possibilities beyond the sound of an acoustic piano.
