Keyboard – Definition

A keyboard is an electronic keyboard instrument capable of producing a wide variety of sounds, including piano, electric piano, organ, strings, synthesizers, and other instrument voices.

What is a Keyboard?

Unlike an acoustic piano, a keyboard generates sound electronically through digital sampling, sound synthesis, or a combination of both. Keyboards range from portable beginner models with automatic accompaniment to professional stage keyboards and music workstations.

One important feature is the type of key action. Some keyboards have lightweight keys, while others use weighted or hammer-action keys designed to provide a playing experience similar to that of an acoustic piano.

How is a Keyboard used in piano playing?

Keyboards are widely used for practice, live performance, music production, and home recording. They offer flexibility through multiple instrument sounds, built-in effects, and connectivity with computers and recording equipment.

For pianists, features such as touch sensitivity, weighted keys, and pedal support help create a more expressive and realistic playing experience.
