Key – Definition

A key is a group of notes organized around a central note called the tonic. It establishes the harmonic framework of a piece of music and determines whether it is based on a major or minor scale.

What is a Key?

A key is defined by its tonic and the pattern of whole steps and half steps that forms its scale. In written music, the key is indicated by a key signature, which appears immediately after the clef and specifies the sharps or flats used throughout the piece unless altered by accidentals.

The key provides a sense of musical “home” and influences the harmony, melody, and overall character of the music.

Why is understanding Keys important for pianists?

Knowing the key of a song helps pianists identify the most likely chords, scales, and harmonic progressions. It also makes transposition much easier when adapting music to suit different singers or instruments.

A solid understanding of keys is essential for reading music, improvising, accompanying others, and developing overall musicianship.
