Harmony – Definition
Harmony is the combination of different notes sounding at the same time. In music, harmony is created by chords and chord progressions that support and enrich a melody.
What is Harmony?
While melody is a sequence of notes played one after another, harmony is concerned with notes that sound simultaneously. Harmony forms the vertical dimension of music and provides the harmonic framework on which melodies are built.
Harmony is most commonly expressed through chords and the relationships between them. The choice and order of chords create musical tension, release, mood, and direction. Whether a piece sounds bright, dramatic, peaceful, or emotional is influenced largely by its harmony.
The study of harmony is an important part of music theory. It includes chord construction, chord functions, voice leading, chord progressions, and harmonic movement in different musical styles.
How is Harmony used in piano playing?
The piano is one of the most versatile harmony instruments because it can play many notes simultaneously. Pianists create harmony by playing chords with one or both hands while supporting the melody.
Understanding harmony enables pianists to accompany singers, recognize chord progressions by ear, improvise more confidently, and create their own arrangements. Even small harmonic changes can dramatically alter the emotional character of a piece of music.
