Sequence – Definition
A sequence is the repetition of a melodic pattern, chord progression, or musical idea at a different pitch level. It is a common compositional technique used to create movement, unity, and development.
What is a Sequence?
A sequence repeats the same musical idea while starting on different notes. Sequences may be melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic, and they often move stepwise or follow a consistent interval pattern.
Composers and songwriters use sequences to build momentum, extend musical phrases, create climaxes, and sometimes prepare a modulation to a new key.
How is a Sequence used in piano playing?
Pianists frequently use sequences when improvising, composing, or creating fills. Repeating a musical idea at different pitch levels helps solos sound more organized and naturally developed.
Learning to recognize and create sequences is an excellent way to improve creativity, phrasing, and musical structure.
