Alla breve, also known as cut time, is a time signature in which the beat is counted in half notes rather than quarter notes. It is commonly written as a C with a vertical line through it.
What is alla breve?
Alla breve is equivalent to a 2/2 time signature. Although the amount of music in each measure may appear similar to 4/4 time, the pulse is different. Instead of feeling four quarter-note beats, musicians feel two stronger half-note beats.
This gives the music a lighter, more flowing character and makes fast passages easier to read and perform.
