Fingering is the planned use of specific fingers to play notes or passages on a musical instrument. Good fingering helps musicians play accurately, smoothly and efficiently.
What is fingering?
On the piano, the fingers are numbered from 1 to 5, with the thumb always being 1 and the little finger being 5 on both hands. Well-planned fingering makes scales, chords, arpeggios and fast passages easier to perform while reducing unnecessary hand movement.
Published sheet music often includes suggested fingerings, although experienced pianists may choose alternative fingerings that better suit their technique or interpretation.
