Harmonic Analysis – Definition
Harmonic analysis is the process of identifying and interpreting the chords and harmonic functions within a piece of music. It helps explain how chord progressions create structure, tension, and resolution.
What is Harmonic Analysis?
Rather than simply naming chords, harmonic analysis examines how they relate to the key and to one another. Musicians often use Roman numeral analysis (I, ii, V, etc.) or functional harmony (tonic, subdominant, and dominant) to describe each chord’s role within a progression.
By revealing the underlying harmonic structure of a composition, harmonic analysis makes it easier to understand why certain chord progressions sound stable, dramatic, or emotionally satisfying.
How is Harmonic Analysis used in piano playing?
For pianists, harmonic analysis is a powerful tool for learning, memorizing, and performing music. Instead of memorizing individual chords, players learn to recognize common harmonic patterns that can be transposed to any key.
Harmonic analysis also supports improvisation, arranging, accompaniment, and ear training by helping pianists understand the function of each chord within a musical context.
