Lead Sheet – Definition
A lead sheet is a simplified form of musical notation that typically contains a melody, chord symbols, and, where appropriate, song lyrics.
What is a Lead Sheet?
Unlike a fully notated score, a lead sheet provides only the essential musical information needed to perform a piece. The performer is expected to create the accompaniment based on the chord symbols and the conventions of the musical style.
Lead sheets are widely used in jazz, pop, musical theatre, and contemporary music. Collections such as The Real Book are well-known examples of lead sheet notation.
How is a Lead Sheet used in piano playing?
Pianists use lead sheets to accompany singers, perform with ensembles, and create their own arrangements. Instead of reading every note of the accompaniment, they interpret the chord symbols and develop suitable voicings, rhythms, and bass patterns.
Learning to play from lead sheets improves harmonic understanding, accompaniment skills, improvisation, and musical flexibility.
