MIDI – Definition
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a communication standard that allows electronic musical instruments, computers, and software to exchange musical performance data.
What is MIDI?
MIDI does not transmit audio. Instead, it sends information such as which note was played, when it started, how long it lasted, and how forcefully it was performed. This data can be used to control virtual instruments, synthesizers, sound modules, and other MIDI-compatible devices.
Since its introduction in the 1980s, MIDI has become a standard technology in music production, composition, recording, live performance, and music education.
How is MIDI used in piano playing?
Digital pianos and MIDI keyboards allow pianists to record performances, control software instruments, edit musical data, and connect to digital audio workstations (DAWs). MIDI also supports many educational applications and interactive learning tools.
