Relative Pitch – Definition
Relative pitch is the ability to recognize and identify musical intervals and note relationships by comparing them to a known reference pitch.
What is Relative Pitch?
Unlike absolute pitch, relative pitch does not require a person to identify notes without a reference. Instead, musicians recognize the distance between notes, intervals, chords, and melodies based on their relationships to one another.
Relative pitch can be developed through ear training and is considered one of the most valuable listening skills for musicians.
How is Relative Pitch used in piano playing?
Pianists use relative pitch to learn songs by ear, recognize chord progressions, improvise, accompany singers, and transpose music into different keys. Strong relative pitch makes it easier to understand how melodies and harmonies fit together.
Developing relative pitch improves musical confidence, creativity, and the ability to play without relying entirely on written notation.
