Segno – Definition
Segno is a musical navigation symbol used in sheet music to indicate a point to return to during performance. The Italian word segno means “sign.”
What is Segno?
The segno symbol is commonly used with navigation instructions such as Dal Segno (D.S.), which tells the performer to return to the segno sign instead of repeating written measures. This system makes printed music shorter and easier to read.
Directions such as D.S. al Coda and D.S. al Fine combine the segno symbol with additional navigation markings to guide performers through the correct order of a piece.
Why is Segno important for pianists?
Pianists frequently encounter segno markings in lead sheets, fake books, and printed arrangements. Understanding these navigation symbols allows players to follow repeats and endings confidently without losing the musical flow.
