Staff – Definition

A staff is a set of five horizontal lines and four spaces used to represent musical pitches in standard notation.

What is a Staff?

Each line and space on the staff represents a specific pitch, determined by the clef placed at the beginning of the staff. Notes that extend beyond the five lines are written using ledger lines.

Piano music is typically written on a grand staff, which combines a treble staff and a bass staff connected by a brace. This allows music for both hands to be written and read together.

How is a Staff used in piano playing?

Pianists read notes from the grand staff to identify the correct pitches for both hands. The treble staff usually contains the higher notes, while the bass staff contains the lower notes.

Learning to read the staff is a fundamental skill that enables pianists to perform written music, understand musical structure, and communicate with other musicians.
