Tablature (TAB) – Definition
Tablature, commonly called TAB, is a notation system used mainly for fretted string instruments such as guitar and bass. Instead of showing pitch like standard notation, tablature shows where to place your fingers on the instrument.
What is Tablature?
Each horizontal line represents a string, while numbers indicate which fret should be played. An open string is marked with a 0, the first fret with a 1, and so on. Some tablature includes rhythmic notation, while simpler versions show only the finger positions and rely on the performer to know the rhythm.
TAB is widely used because it allows players to learn songs without reading traditional music notation.
Why should pianists understand Tablature?
Although pianists do not use tablature themselves, they often encounter TAB when working with guitarists or reading popular song arrangements. Understanding the basics of tablature helps keyboard players follow guitar parts, recognize riffs, and create complementary piano arrangements.
A basic knowledge of TAB can also improve communication with other musicians during rehearsals and live performances.
