Half Note – Definition

A half note is a note value that lasts for half the duration of a whole note. In 4/4 time, a half note receives two beats. In British music terminology, it is called a minim.

What is a Half Note?

A half note is written with an open note head and a stem. It represents a note that lasts twice as long as a quarter note and half as long as a whole note.

In a 4/4 measure, two half notes fill the entire bar, while each half note lasts for two beats. The exact duration depends on the tempo, but the proportional relationship between note values always remains the same.

How is a Half Note used in piano playing?

Pianists often use half notes to create a calm and steady musical feel. Holding notes for two beats helps establish smooth phrasing and provides a stable harmonic foundation.

In accompaniment, the left hand frequently plays bass notes as half notes while the right hand performs melodies or rhythmic chord patterns. Unless the score indicates otherwise, the key should be held for the full value of the note.
