Note Value – Definition
A note value indicates the relative duration of a musical note. It determines how long a note is held in relation to other notes in the music.
What is a Note Value?
Common note values include the whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, and sixteenth note. Each value is proportionally related to the others, allowing rhythm to be written with precision. Dots, ties, and tuplets can further modify note durations.
Note values work together with the time signature to define the rhythmic structure of a piece of music.
How is a Note Value used in piano playing?
Pianists use note values to determine when to play and how long each note should sound. Reading note values accurately is essential for maintaining rhythm, phrasing, and coordination between both hands.
Understanding note values also helps pianists perform syncopation, rhythmic patterns, and expressive musical phrasing with greater confidence.
