Rap – Definition

Rap is a vocal style in which rhythmically spoken lyrics are performed over a musical beat. It is one of the core elements of hip-hop culture.

What is Rap?

Rap emphasizes rhythm, rhyme, phrasing, and lyrical delivery rather than sustained melody. A rapper’s unique flow is created through timing, accent placement, rhyme schemes, and interaction with the beat. Although rap is primarily rhythm-based, many modern artists incorporate melodic elements into their performances.

Rap has become one of the world’s most influential musical styles and is often combined with pop, R&B, rock, electronic music, and many other genres.

How is Rap used with piano?

Pianists accompanying rap typically provide rhythmic chord patterns, repeating riffs, atmospheric textures, or harmonic support while leaving space for the vocal performance. Strong timing and groove are more important than complex harmonic movement.

Understanding rap helps keyboard players develop rhythmic precision, accompaniment skills, and an appreciation of modern music production.
