Soloist – Definition

A soloist is a musician or singer who performs the principal musical part, either alone or accompanied by other musicians. The soloist typically carries the main melody or performs an improvised solo.

What is a Soloist?

Soloists are responsible for expressing the musical ideas that take center stage in a performance. Depending on the style, a solo may follow a written melody or be created through improvisation over a chord progression.

Strong technique, musical expression, and confident communication are important qualities for every successful soloist.

Why is this important for pianists?

Pianists often alternate between accompanying and solo playing. During a piano solo, the performer may combine melody, harmony, rhythm, and bass into a complete musical performance.

Developing solo skills helps pianists become more expressive improvisers, stronger performers, and more versatile musicians.
