Solo – Definition
A solo is a musical passage in which one performer takes the leading role. A solo may be written by the composer or created through improvisation.
What is a Solo?
In many styles of music, a solo gives one musician the opportunity to showcase melodic ideas, musical expression, or technical skill while the other musicians provide accompaniment.
Solos appear in virtually every genre, including pop, rock, blues, jazz, classical music, and contemporary worship music.
How is a Solo played on the piano?
Piano solos often combine scales, arpeggios, rhythmic motifs, and expressive phrasing to create memorable musical ideas. Effective solos are built through melody, dynamics, timing, and emotional development rather than speed alone.
Learning to play solos helps pianists develop creativity, improvisation skills, and confidence as performers.
