Dynamics refers to the variation in volume and intensity in music. Changes in dynamics help shape musical expression and give a performance contrast, emotion and direction.

What are dynamics?

Dynamics are traditionally indicated with Italian terms such as piano (p) for soft and forte (f) for loud. Other markings, including crescendo and decrescendo, show gradual changes in volume.

On keyboard instruments, dynamics are created primarily through the force and speed with which the keys are played. On digital pianos, this is measured as velocity, allowing the instrument to respond naturally to the player’s touch.

How are dynamics used in piano playing?

Dynamics are one of the most important expressive tools available to piano players. By varying the strength of each note, pianists can shape musical phrases, emphasize melodies and create dramatic contrast between different sections of a piece.

Developing good dynamic control helps transform a technically correct performance into one that sounds expressive, musical and engaging.
