Volume – Definition
Volume refers to the loudness level of an audio signal or musical instrument. On electronic instruments and audio equipment, volume is adjusted using controls that increase or decrease the output level.
What is Volume?
Volume determines how loud music is heard through speakers or headphones. In live performance and recording, it is controlled using volume knobs, faders, mixers, amplifiers, audio interfaces, or software controls. Although volume is often measured in decibels (dB), musicians also think about how loud a performance sounds in relation to other instruments.
Volume should not be confused with dynamics, which describe the expressive changes in loudness created by the performer.
Why is Volume important for keyboard players?
Keyboard players must control both musical dynamics and electronic volume. Proper volume settings help balance the keyboard with singers and other instruments while preventing distortion or excessive loudness.
Understanding volume also improves recording, live performance, and overall sound quality.
