Count-In – Definition
A count-in is a spoken or rhythmic cue given before a musical performance begins. It establishes the tempo, pulse, and starting point so that all musicians begin together.
What is a Count-In?
A count-in usually lasts one or two measures, depending on the style of music. In 4/4 time, a common verbal count-in is “One, two, one-two-three-four,” allowing performers to internalize the tempo before the first note.
In recording sessions, a click track or metronome often provides the count-in and serves as a timing reference throughout the performance.
How is a Count-In used in piano playing?
Pianists frequently give the count-in when accompanying singers, rehearsing with a band, or leading an ensemble. A clear count-in helps establish a consistent tempo and ensures that all performers start together.
Some pianists combine the verbal count with a simple rhythmic pattern or a light rhythmic cue on the keyboard to reinforce the groove before the music begins.
