Funk is a style of music that emerged during the 1960s, emphasizing rhythm and groove over complex melodies. It is built around the interaction of drums, bass and rhythm instruments.

What is funk?

Funk is characterized by syncopated rhythms, strong rhythmic precision and an emphasis on “the one”—the first beat of each measure. Harmonically, funk often uses dominant seventh, ninth and thirteenth chords played in repeating rhythmic patterns known as vamps.

The style has influenced jazz, R&B, soul, rock, hip-hop and many forms of contemporary popular music.

How is funk played on the piano?

Funk piano and keyboard playing relies on short, precise chord voicings, rhythmic accuracy and close interaction with the bass and drums. Rather than playing continuously, keyboard players often use sparse, syncopated chord stabs that contribute to the overall groove.

Learning funk develops rhythmic precision, coordination and a stronger sense of groove that benefits many other musical styles.
