G is one of the seven natural musical notes. On the piano, G is the white key located between the first and second black keys in the group of three black keys.
What is G?
In the key of C major, G is the fifth scale degree, also known as the dominant. As a natural note, G has no accidental, but it can be altered to G-sharp (G#) or G-flat (G♭).
G is also the tonic of G major, a key signature with one sharp (F#), and is one of the most commonly used notes in Western music.
How is G used in piano playing?
G is an important reference note on the keyboard and appears in countless scales, chords and melodies. Becoming familiar with its position helps pianists navigate the keyboard confidently and play accurately in many common keys.
