Instrumentation is the selection and use of instruments in a musical composition or arrangement. It determines which instruments perform the various musical parts and how they contribute to the overall sound.

Instrumentation involves assigning musical roles to different instruments based on their pitch range, tone color, expressive qualities, and technical capabilities. Effective instrumentation helps create clarity, balance, and contrast within an ensemble.
The term is used in all areas of music, from orchestral works and chamber music to jazz ensembles, rock bands, and modern studio productions. Instrumentation is closely related to orchestration, although orchestration usually refers specifically to writing for an orchestra.
How is Instrumentation used in piano playing?
Pianists consider instrumentation when performing with other musicians or creating arrangements. The piano may provide harmony, melody, rhythm, bass lines, or a combination of these roles, depending on the ensemble.
Understanding instrumentation helps pianists choose appropriate registers, voicings, and textures so the piano complements rather than competes with the other instruments.
