Intro – Definition
An intro is the opening section of a piece of music. It establishes the tempo, key, mood, and often introduces important musical ideas before the main song begins.
What is an Intro?
The intro prepares the listener for the first verse, chorus, or main theme. It may consist of a single chord, a repeated groove, a melodic phrase, or a complete instrumental passage.
In contemporary pop and rock music, intros are often kept relatively short to engage the listener quickly. In other musical styles, such as classical music or progressive rock, introductions may be considerably longer and more elaborate.
How is an Intro used in piano playing?
Pianists often use the intro to establish the rhythm, harmony, and musical character of a performance. An intro may feature chord progressions, arpeggios, melodic motifs, or rhythmic accompaniment patterns.
