Motif – Definition

A motif is a short, recognizable musical idea that serves as a basic building block of a melody or composition.

What is a Motif?

A motif is typically a brief sequence of notes, a distinctive rhythm, or a combination of both. Throughout a piece of music, the motif may be repeated, varied, developed, or combined with other musical ideas to create unity and structure.

Motifs are found in every musical style, from classical music to pop, rock, jazz, and film scores. Many memorable songs are built around a simple motif that listeners quickly recognize.

How is a Motif used in piano playing?

Pianists use motifs in performance, composition, improvisation, and arranging. Developing a short musical idea through repetition and variation creates coherence and makes improvisations and compositions more memorable.

Learning to recognize motifs also helps pianists analyse musical structure and understand how larger melodies and themes are constructed.
