An oscillator is an electronic or software component that generates a continuous waveform and serves as the primary sound source in a synthesizer.

Oscillators generate waveforms such as sine, square, sawtooth, and triangle waves. Each waveform has its own harmonic content and produces a distinctive sound. The oscillator’s frequency determines the pitch, while additional synthesis tools shape the final tone.

Most synthesizers use one or more oscillators as the starting point for creating electronic sounds.
