Ossia is a notation indicating an alternative version of a musical passage that the performer may choose instead of the original.
What is Ossia?
The word ossia is Italian for “or.” An ossia passage is usually printed in a smaller staff above or below the main music and provides an alternative way of performing the same section. The alternative may be easier, more difficult, or simply offer a different musical interpretation.
Ossia passages are especially common in piano music, where composers sometimes provide optional versions to accommodate different technical approaches or artistic choices.
