An ostinato is a short musical pattern that is repeated continuously throughout part or all of a piece of music.
What is an Ostinato?
An ostinato may be rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic and can appear in any musical voice, although it is most commonly found in the bass. The repeated pattern provides stability while other musical elements develop above it.
Ostinatos are widely used in classical music, pop, rock, jazz, film music, and minimalist compositions to create momentum, texture, and musical unity.
How is an Ostinato used in piano playing?
Pianists often play ostinato patterns in the left hand while the right hand performs melodies, chords, or improvisations. This technique creates a strong rhythmic foundation and supports the overall groove of the music.
Practising ostinatos helps pianists improve rhythmic consistency, hand independence, and accompaniment skills.
