Voice – Definition
In music, a voice is an individual melodic line within a musical texture. A voice may be sung by a singer or played by an instrument, and several voices can sound simultaneously.
What is a Voice in Music?
Music often consists of multiple independent voices moving together to create harmony. In traditional four-part writing, these voices are soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. The movement of these individual lines is known as voice leading.
Even on a single instrument such as the piano, several voices can be played at the same time.
Why are Voices important for pianists?
Pianists frequently balance several musical voices simultaneously. The melody should often stand out clearly while the accompanying voices provide harmonic support without overpowering it.
Learning to hear and shape individual voices leads to more expressive playing, better phrasing, and a richer musical texture.
