Pivot Chord – Definition
A pivot chord is a chord shared by two different keys that is used to create a smooth modulation from one key to another.
What is a Pivot Chord?
A pivot chord belongs naturally to both the original key and the destination key. During a modulation, the chord is first interpreted according to the original key before taking on a new harmonic function in the new key. This creates a seamless transition between tonal centres.
Pivot chord modulation is one of the most common and effective techniques for changing key without sounding abrupt.
How is a Pivot Chord used in piano playing?
Pianists use pivot chords to move smoothly between keys in songs, arrangements, and improvisations. Recognising chords that belong to more than one key makes it easier to create natural-sounding modulations and maintain musical flow.
