Popular music is a broad category of music that includes styles such as pop, rock, blues, jazz, funk, soul, country, hip-hop, and many other contemporary genres. It is generally distinguished from Western classical music by its emphasis on groove, accessible song structures, and modern performance styles.
What is Popular Music?
Popular music is typically built around memorable melodies, repeating chord progressions, steady rhythms, and strong grooves. Most songs follow recognizable forms such as verse, chorus, bridge, and outro, making the music easy to follow and enjoyable to perform.
In some countries—particularly in Scandinavia—the term rhythmic music is commonly used to describe these styles in contrast to classical music. Internationally, however, popular music is the more widely recognized term.
