An outro is the closing section of a piece of music. It brings the song to a satisfying conclusion and follows the final verse, chorus or solo.

What is an outro?

An outro provides the musical ending of a song. It may repeat material from the introduction, develop a new musical idea or gradually reduce the energy before the final chord. Some outros end abruptly, while others fade out or feature an extended instrumental ending.

Outros are common in virtually every style of contemporary music, including pop, rock, jazz, blues and country.

How is an outro used in piano playing?

Piano players use the outro to bring a performance to a natural conclusion. This may involve repeating a chord progression, slowing the dynamics, adding a final melodic phrase or sustaining the last chord with the pedal.

A well-planned outro gives the performance a polished and professional finish while reinforcing the overall structure of the song.
