Riff – Definition

A riff is a short, memorable musical phrase that is repeated throughout a song and often serves as its main rhythmic or melodic idea.

What is a Riff?

Riffs can be melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic. They are typically simple enough to be easily remembered while distinctive enough to give a song its unique identity. Many famous rock, blues, funk, and pop songs are instantly recognizable because of their opening riff.

A strong riff often provides the foundation for the groove and overall character of a song.

How is a Riff used in piano playing?

Pianists use riffs to create memorable intros, accompaniment patterns, and repeating hooks. A well-played piano riff combines accurate timing, consistent articulation, and rhythmic energy to drive the music forward.

Learning classic riffs helps pianists improve groove, coordination, and stylistic awareness while building a repertoire of recognizable musical ideas.
