Tuning – Definition

Tuning is the process of adjusting an instrument so that its notes match the desired pitch standard and relate correctly to one another. On a piano, tuning involves adjusting the tension of the strings to achieve accurate pitch.

What is Piano Tuning?

Modern pianos are typically tuned to concert pitch, where A above middle C vibrates at 440 Hz. Because most piano notes have two or three strings, each set must be tuned precisely together to produce a clear, unified sound.

Modern pianos are tuned using the equal temperament system, allowing music to be played comfortably in every key without retuning the instrument.

Why is Tuning important for pianists?

Regular tuning keeps an acoustic piano sounding its best and ensures that it blends correctly with other instruments. Changes in humidity and temperature can gradually affect string tension and pitch.

Digital pianos remain permanently in tune, although many models allow players to adjust the master tuning when matching recordings or other instruments.
