A break is a short pause in the music during which all or most of the instruments stop playing. Breaks are used to create contrast, build anticipation and emphasize the section that follows.
What is a break?
Although the instruments stop playing, the underlying pulse continues. A break often occurs just before a chorus, solo or other important section, making the return of the full band more dramatic and exciting.
Breaks may be completely silent or feature a brief fill played by a single instrument, such as the drums, piano or vocals.
How is a break used in piano playing?
For piano players, executing a clean break requires accurate timing and careful listening. Releasing the keys at exactly the right moment is just as important as playing the notes themselves.
Well-placed breaks add energy, create musical tension and make transitions between song sections more effective. They are widely used in pop, rock, blues, funk and jazz.
