A phrase is a complete musical idea that forms a natural unit within a melody. Like a sentence in spoken language, a phrase has a beginning, development and ending.
What is a phrase?
A melody is typically built from several phrases. Many phrases last two or four measures, although their length can vary depending on the musical style. Phrases often end with a cadence, a sustained note or a brief pause that creates a sense of completion before the next phrase begins.
Recognizing phrases helps musicians understand the structure and flow of a piece of music.
How are phrases used in piano playing?
Piano players shape phrases by controlling dynamics, articulation and timing rather than simply playing one note after another. A well-shaped phrase sounds natural and expressive, much like a singer taking a breath between musical ideas.
Understanding phrasing helps pianists perform melodies more musically and communicate the character of a piece more effectively.
