Notehead – Definition
A notehead is the oval part of a musical note. Its position on the staff indicates pitch, while its appearance contributes to identifying the note’s rhythmic value.
What is a Notehead?
Noteheads may be open or filled. Open noteheads are used for whole notes and half notes, while filled noteheads are used for quarter notes and shorter note values. Their position on the staff determines which pitch is to be played.
Noteheads work together with stems, flags, beams, accidentals, and other notation symbols to communicate both pitch and rhythm in written music.
How is a Notehead used in piano playing?
Pianists read the position of noteheads to identify the correct keys on the keyboard. Two or more noteheads aligned vertically indicate that the notes are played simultaneously as a chord.
Recognizing notehead patterns also helps pianists read melodic movement, intervals, and chord shapes more efficiently.
