Voice leading is the technique of moving smoothly from one chord to the next by guiding each individual musical voice with the smallest and most natural movement possible.

Good voice leading keeps common tones in the same voice whenever possible and moves the remaining notes by the shortest distance to the next chord. This creates smooth harmonic transitions and a connected musical texture.
