Inner Voice – Definition
An inner voice is any musical line that lies between the highest melody and the lowest bass line in a piece of music. Inner voices provide harmonic support, connect chords smoothly, and enrich the overall texture.
What is an Inner Voice?
In music with several simultaneous parts, the melody usually appears in the highest voice, while one or more inner voices fill in the harmony below it. Inner voices may move in parallel with the melody or follow independent melodic lines, depending on the musical style.
Good inner voice movement is an important aspect of voice leading, helping chord progressions sound smooth and natural.
Why are Inner Voices important for pianists?
Pianists frequently play several voices at the same time. While the melody should remain clearly audible, the inner voices add warmth, depth, and harmonic richness without drawing attention away from the main musical line.
Learning to balance inner voices improves accompaniment, arranging, chord voicings, and expressive piano playing across classical, jazz, pop, and gospel styles.
